While much has been done over the last 20 years to alleviate hunger, approximately one half of the world’s population still live in poverty.  Over one billion people are trapped in what has become termed, “extreme poverty”, a life of absolute desperation, with no hope of breaking free.  Illiterate and unskilled, employment is a luxury that few enjoy.  Landless, without possessions, few qualify for legitimate loans for establishing themselves in small enterprises of self employment.  Without access to clean water or an understanding of health and sanitation, millions die each year from preventable disease.  Without representation, or a voice, these are the forgotten people of our world.   And yet, they are not totally alone.  ADRA is working in some of the poorest countries of our world, helping people break free from poverty.
